Validate a Colombian NIT
Check the verification digit of a Colombian NIT, in your browser, for free.

This checks the NIT verification digit when the number matches the NIT formula. A number that fails it but is 9 or 10 digits long is shown as a cédula instead, since a cédula has no verification digit — neither result confirms anything with Colombia's tax authority (DIAN).

How the NIT verification digit works
A NIT (Número de Identificación Tributaria) is a body of digits plus one verification digit (dígito de verificación, DV), often written after a dash, for example 800197268-4.
The verification digit comes from multiplying each digit of the body, from right to left, by a fixed sequence of prime-number weights, adding the results, and taking the remainder after dividing by 11. If that remainder is 0 or 1, it's used directly as the check digit; otherwise the check digit is 11 minus the remainder.
A cédula (national ID number) can also appear where a tax ID is asked for, especially for individuals without a separate NIT. A cédula has no verification digit, so this checker first tries the NIT formula above on any 9 to 11-digit number; if the check digit doesn't match and the number is 9 or 10 digits long in total, it shows the number as a cédula (format OK, DV not checked) instead of as an invalid NIT, since it can't always tell the two apart. A dash before the last digit makes no difference either way — punctuation is stripped before checking — so to have the NIT's own verification digit actually checked, make sure the whole number, DV included, is typed correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Do I include the dash and the DV digit?
Type it either way — with or without the dash (800197268-4 or 8001972684). The checker strips punctuation before checking either way, so the dash itself changes nothing.
Does a valid result mean the NIT is registered with DIAN?
No — see the note below the checker. It means the verification digit matches. Only Colombia's tax authority (DIAN) can confirm the number is actually assigned.
What if the number I have is a cédula, not a NIT?
A cédula has no verification digit to check. If a number fails the NIT formula but is 9 or 10 digits long in total, this checker shows it as a cédula (format OK, DV not checked) rather than marking it invalid, since it can't always tell the two apart.
Why did a correct-looking NIT fail outright?
That only happens for an 11-digit number: a mistyped digit in the body or the DV copied wrong changes what the formula expects, and an 11-digit number that fails isn't shown as a cédula instead. Shorter (9 or 10-digit) NITs that fail the DV check are shown as a cédula instead of as invalid — see the question above.
