How the RUT verification digit works
A RUT (Rol Único Tributario) is a body of 7 or 8 digits, a dash, and one verification digit (dígito verificador) that can be 0-9 or the letter K.
The verification digit comes from multiplying each digit of the body, from right to left, by a repeating sequence of weights (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, then back to 2), adding the results, and subtracting the remainder after dividing by 11 from 11. A result of 11 becomes 0, and a result of 10 becomes K.
The same format is used for individuals and for companies (sometimes called RUT de empresa); this checker treats them the same way.
Frequently asked questions
What does 'K' mean at the end of a RUT?
It's a valid verification digit, standing in for 10 (a single digit can't represent two characters). It's not a typo — a RUT ending in K is entirely normal.
Does a valid result mean the RUT exists?
No — see the note below the checker. It means the verification digit matches. Only Chile's Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII) can confirm a RUT is actually assigned.
Do dots matter (12.345.678-5 vs 12345678-5)?
No, the checker ignores dots and dashes. Type it however you like.
Why does changing one digit break a valid RUT?
The verification digit is calculated from every digit in the body. Changing any one of them almost always produces a different required check digit.
